Transportation
A multi-billion dollar food distributor engaged
Harkness Wilder to develop a transportation strategy to consolidate
inbound LTL shipments into full truckloads, in order to reduce the
cost of goods, limit handling and put-away at their DC’s, reduce
safety stock requirements, and gain greater control over all
transportation. Harkness Wilder analyzed inbound LTL shipments to
identify consolidation opportunities, and constructed a decision
tree to properly plan the consolidations. This logic was then
incorporated into a software model, programmed in MS Access and
Visual Basic, that enables the Client to plan and measure inbound
consolidations opportunities. We developed user documentation to
accompany the software. Harkness Wilder also developed the process
flows for Procurement, Transportation, and Warehousing practices to
support the strategy, and developed an RFP to evaluate 3rd Party
Logistics Providers to manage the consolidation program. The first
set of vendor shipments executed under this program is expected to
yield transportation savings of 11-14%.
